Feature Issue Announcement:Advances in Metasurfaces

Chinese OpticsLetters (COL) invites original manuscriptsubmissions for a Special Issue on Advancesin Metasurfaces to be publishedin May 2018. Metasurface refers to a type of artificial thin film materialswith sub-wavelength features that can generate desired and/or new opticalphenomena. The past decade has witnessed significant advances in metasurfaceranging from fundamental physics to nanomanufacturing methods and practicalapplication. Typical research efforts include wave-front engineering andfocusing, polarization manipulation, light trapping and localization,absorption engineering and colorimetric display. Being able to manipulate theoptical properties of metasurfaces will create new regimes of optical physicsand impact a broad range of photonic, energy and biomedical technologiesincluding new commercial product research and development. This special issuewill include excellent review articles and original contributions covering therapid advances and tremendous breadth of this emerging technical area. The topics of this special issue include but are not limited to:

·        Fundamentaldesign, fabrication and characterization of metasurfaces;

·        Novellight-matter interaction mechanisms and phenomena with metasurfaces;  

·        Manipulationof spatial polarization and phase diagram;

·        Integrationwith compact optoelectronic devices to enhance the device performance;

·        Integrationwith functional materials (including phase change materials and 2D materials);

·        Integrationwith passive waveguides and optical fibers;

·        Enhancedlight-matter interaction on metasurfaces for enhanced chiral, nonlinear opticsand biosensing;

·        Absorptionengineering for energy harvesting, conversion and storage;

·        Newmanufacturing methods for affordable, large scale and more accuratefabrication;

·        Newcharacterization methodologies to reveal new light-matter interaction mechanisms;

·        Informationstorage, retrieving, processing and transmission with metasurfaces;

·        Quantuminformation storage, retrieving, processing and transmission with metasurfaces;

·        Applicationsin optical display, imaging and microscopy;

·        Applicationsin optical confinement and manipulation of micro- and nano-scale objects;

·        Applicationsin micro- and nano-fabrication and additive manufacturing;

·        Opticalinstrumentation using metasurfaces (e.g. new holography);

·        Industrialapplications.
